Shielding Designs for the future FAIR project

Introduction In December 2003 GSI was given the first step of approval by the Hesse Ministry for environment to build the new international accelerator facility for beams of ions and antiprotons [1]. This approval was passed after the assessment by the radiation protection experts TÜV [2]. In order to meet the requirements to build the facilities for the FAIR project [3] shielding calculations have been performed using the radiation transport code FLUKA [4, 5]. Shielding calculations for the SIS300, for the antiproton production area and for the cave for compressed baryonic matter have already been performed (see [6, 7]).
